There are hundreds of team member success stories like these. If you know of someone who would be a good fit for “Moving Up,” let us know at

Giovanna Parra – Cannery Casino Hotel – Employment Supervisor

Moving Up: Human Resources Employment Supervisor (2016); Human Resources Representative (2013); Human Resources Clerk (2011).

On the Job: As Human Resources Employment Supervisor at Cannery Casino Hotel, Giovanna Parra is working hard to make sure that the property has the team members it needs to keep everything running smoothly as well as support hiring managers and new team members. Having worked in the Human Resources department for nearly six years, Parra has seen many aspects of what team member needs are from Human Resources, and uses that experience in her day-to-day duties.

In her current role, Parra focuses on employment needs for Cannery and Eastside Cannery. She conducts orientation in both English and Spanish for new team members in addition to managing internal transfers. She also takes care of data entry, creating requisitions for online applications and manages online forms. In addition, Parra runs the front office for Human Resources with duties including managing monthly invoices and ordering office supplies.

One of Parra’s favorite things about her job is this wide array of responsibilities.

“I face different challenges every day,” said Parra. “No two days are ever the same.”

Parra’s ability to learn all the different aspects of her job as well as her dedication to customer service are what makes her excel, said her supervisor, Carlos Calderon, Employment and Compensation Manager.

“Giovanna understands customer service. She is the go-to person in the office for both employees and managers,” said Calderon. “She has a sincere interest in helping employees and finding solutions to their questions and issues.”

Her thirst for learning is also helping her excel. Calderon noted that Parra has sought out information on areas outside of employment, including seniority, job bidding and employee relations.

“Her thirst to learn is one of her greatest strengths,” said Calderon.

After Hours: Outside of the office, Parra can be found enjoying her life with her partner, especially with fun hobbies like swing dancing and traveling.

Evan Meyer – Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall – Housekeeping Manager
Moving Up: Housekeeping Manager (2014); Assistant Front Office Manager (2013); Front Desk Shift Supervisor (2011); Front Desk Lead Agent (2010); Security Officer (2009).

On the Job: As Housekeeping Manager, Evan Meyer oversees approximately 170 Sam’s Town team members. He’s been with the Company for seven years and began his career with Boyd Gaming as a Security Officer at The Orleans in 2009 before taking a position at the front desk. He eventually worked his way into management and transferred to Sam’s Town in 2014, where he was named Housekeeping Manager.

In his current role, Meyer oversees Hotel and Casino Housekeeping and is also in charge of budgeting and providing his team members with the tools they need to succeed.

“I work with an amazing team of people, and it’s important to me that they know how important they are to our guests’ experience at the property,” he said.

Providing exceptional customer service is one of the things Meyer really loves, and his passion helped to inspire his fellow team members.

“Guest service is what really separates us from the competition,” he said. “Our competitors have the slots and tables, a hotel and restaurants, but they do not have our people.”

Linda Daly, Hotel Manager at Sam’s Town, said Meyer’s personality made his transition to Sam’s Town from The Orleans very easy.

“You just can’t help but like Evan. He’s sincere, quick-witted, outgoing and supportive,” she said. “He won his team over in no time and he instantly became part of the Sam’s Town family.

He is open-minded, shows a great deal of ingenuity and approaches all challenges and changes with ease and optimism.”

Evan was also recognized in 2016 by the Nevada Hotel and Lodging Association as Housekeeping Employee of the Year in their annual Stars of the Industry Hospitality Awards.

After Hours: Meyer loves trying new cuisines from various cultures. He also enjoys playing video games on his Xbox, watching shows like “The Walking Dead” or pursuing his dream of one day playing on “Jeopardy!” by taking their qualifier tests.
