Delta Downs Team Member of the Year Presents Special Memory Quilt to the Boyd Family

Security Officer James Smart could not believe his ears when he learned he had won the 2016 Team Member of the Year award for Delta Downs. Smart humbly accepted his award at Delta Down’s annual team member awards banquet in February, where his wife watched with pride and shed tears of joy on the accomplishment.

Smart has worked with the Company for three years in Delta Downs’ Security Department ensuring all guests are safe while they visit and play at the property. He enjoys the responsibilities that come with his role, as well as meeting and talking to new people every day.

As Delta Downs’ Team Member of the Year, Smart and his wife were flown to Las Vegas for a celebratory dinner with Boyd Gaming’s Executive Chairman and Co-Founder Bill Boyd and Vice Chairman, Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Marianne Johnson on Tuesday, May 9. To show their appreciation, Smart and his wife brought a specially made memory quilt to present to the Boyd family at the dinner.

“My wife and I are truly thankful for the opportunities I’ve experienced working at Boyd Gaming,” said Smart. “To express our gratitude, my wife handmade a memory quilt for the Boyd Family that commemorates the Company and can be passed down to future generations.”

Mrs. Smart owns an embroidery business and used her talents to create a one-of-a-kind gift for the Boyd Family. The memory quilt includes stitched in images of all 24 Boyd Gaming properties across the nation, including the Rainbow-Corporate Office in Las Vegas.

Johnson said she and Bill Boyd were very excited to receive the memory quilt, and said they are grateful to have outstanding team members like Smart, who play an integral part in the Company’s success.

“My dad and I were very touched that Mrs. Smart took so much time to create such a thoughtful gift,” said Johnson. “We will cherish this memory quilt for many years to come.”

In addition to earning a trip to Las Vegas, Smart also received an all-expense-paid vacation for two to Hawaii. During their unforgettable time in Hawaii, Smart and his wife visited Pearl Harbor, took part in a traditional Hawaiian luau and celebrated 14 years of marriage.
