Orleans and Suncoast Become Eligible to Receive Green Globe Certification

As part of our commitment to Boyd Style, Boyd Gaming “Works Smart” to protect the environment by pursuing sustainable business practices that conserve water and save energy. Going above and beyond to protect our environment, The Orleans Hotel and Casino and Suncoast Hotel and Casino have achieved eligibility to qualify for Green Globe Certification through the Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy and the Green Building Initiative.

The certification is a rating qualification reserved for spaces that achieve a variety of attainments in green building and sustainability. Boyd Gaming’s Design and Construction Department has led the effort to help make The Orleans and Suncoast eligible to receive the certification. The department is also in the process of preparing Aliante Casino + Hotel + Spa, Cannery Casino Hotel, Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall – Las Vegas, California Hotel and Casino and Gold Coast Hotel and Casino to become eligible for Green Globe Certification as well.

Over the past several years, Boyd Gaming has implemented effective and efficient systems to better conserve water at several properties. In Las Vegas, Boyd Gaming has upgraded the utility water chemical treatment program at eight properties, which has saved approximately 50 million gallons of water each year. These savings are equivalent to the average amount of water used in approximately 500 households in one year. In addition to saving water, the utility upgrade has reduced the chemicals used in cooling towers by 75 percent. In recognition of Boyd Gaming’s efforts to save water and improve water efficiency in southern Nevada, the Company received the Water Conservation Coalition’s Water Hero Award in 2015.

Electrical savings have also been top-of-mind, with the Company reducing annual electricity usage by nearly 20 million kilowatt-hours to date, with plans to lower annual consumption by an additional 5 million kWh each year. These savings are equivalent to the annual electrical usage of more than 1,800 homes. One of Boyd Gaming’s most significant energy savings comes from a company-wide effort to upgrade Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment and fluorescent and neon lighting to LED lighting. In addition, Boyd Gaming continues to work with NV Energy on various projects to find the best practices for energy efficiency at the Company’s Las Vegas properties.

The Green Globe certification is just the latest “green” accomplishment for our Company. For example, in 2009, Boyd Gaming Linen and Uniform Services became the first industrial laundry in the nation to receive a LEED Silver certification. Orleans Arena followed with a LEED Gold certification in 2014.
