When Vice President and General Manager Brenda Temple checked on the space available for a groundbreaking celebration at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa, she found that just one meeting room was available for that day.
“Today, this room was the only space we had available for this event! Reaching capacity is a good problem to have... and it is one we are getting ready to fix,” she told the group of more than 50 state and local officials, community leaders and media representatives attending.
The luncheon event held on September 20 marked the groundbreaking on the addition of nearly 15,000 square feet to the Michigan City casino’s meeting and event space, bringing the total to 45,000 square feet. The expansion adds an 11,000 square foot ballroom divisible into six smaller rooms and 3,800 square feet of pre-function space. Construction on the project has begun, with a targeted completion date of Fall 2019.
“The expansion of this meeting center is the next step in our commitment to Michigan City and northwest Indiana... an investment that will further build on the success of Blue Chip, an investment we are confident will draw more visitors to this community than ever before,” said Bill Wright, Boyd Gaming Senior Vice President of Operations, in remarks to the group.
Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer also shared remarks at the luncheon, commemorating the groundbreaking of the expansion and the city’s partnership with Blue Chip.
“The collaboration and commitment of the community and Blue Chip Casino has been great over the last 20 years. Over $20 million have gone to community organizations and all of the economic growth has happened because of the partnership,” said Mayor Meer. “We have used monies to help our school system, the infrastructure, our law enforcement, our fire department and our streets. We are committed to our partnership and I am proud and excited about the expansion.”
The expansion is Boyd Gaming’s latest investment in Blue Chip, the premier entertainment, tourism and meeting destination in its region. Since 2006, the Company has added an all-new casino facility, a 302-room hotel tower, the Stardust Events Center, a 10,000-square-foot spa, salon and fitness center, and two new restaurants. Additionally, the Company finished a complete upgrade and redesign of Blue Chip’s original 184-room hotel tower in 2016.
