Boyd Gaming Helps to 'Fill the Plate' at Three Square

No community is immune to hunger.  And while southern Nevada is no exception, over the last decade the Las Vegas Valley has made great progress in the fight against hunger, thanks to the work of one of the nation’s most innovative and efficient food banks – Three Square.

A better way

Three Square was formed in 2007, following the closure of southern Nevada’s largest food bank at the time.  Community leaders recognized the need for continued food assistance in the community, but felt a more centralized and efficient approach was in order.  Three Square was formed as a central source where nutritious food could be purchased in bulk at a lower cost, then distributed as needed through food banks throughout the Valley.

One of the first companies to step up in support of Three Square was Boyd Gaming – and the Company has remained one of the organization’s largest supporters ever since.

In 2018, Three Square distributed more than 39 million meals across southern Nevada through more than 1,400 community partners, including community food banks, faith-based organizations, schools, after-school programs and community centers like the YMCA.

Helping hands

In September 2019, Boyd Gaming continued its legacy as one of Three Square’s most committed partners, as Vice Chairman, Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Marianne Johnson presented $35,000 in support of Three Square’s Fall and Holiday season initiatives. One of the initiatives sponsored was the “Fill the Plate” food drive. During the drive, Three Square challenges the southern Nevada community to fill a giant 30’x30’ plate in their warehouse with non-perishable food items in an effort to raise awareness of food insecurity. Boyd Gaming also supported Three Square’s holiday match campaign, helping the organization match dollar-for-dollar contributions made by the community during the holiday season.

In addition to financial support, Boyd Gaming team members regularly pitch in at the Three Square warehouse, packaging meals for those in need. Throughout last year, Boyd Gaming IT, Human Resources and Marketing teams helped assemble thousands of Kids Café meals for local school kids.

In a post-event thank you message to Boyd Gaming team members, the volunteer engagement manager at Three Square said, “We would like to thank you for organizing such an enthusiastic group of individuals to volunteer at Three Square!  We appreciate you and your team coming in to help pack meals for children who are food insecure and hungry in our community.”

Boyd Gaming encourages all team members to help address hunger in their communities. If you’re not sure where to donate or volunteer, check out Three Square’s national partner, Feeding America or connect with your local food banks. Every contribution of time or money can help.
